How Netherlands VAT numbers are built
NL followed by 9 digits, the letter B and 2 digits. For companies the 9 digits are usually the RSIN. Since 2020 sole proprietors have a separate VAT identification number (btw-id) that is not based on their citizen service number.
Check digit
Company numbers pass the 11-test on the 9 digits; the btw-id of sole proprietors passes a modulo-97 test over the whole number. The validator checks both.
Common mistakes
- Sole proprietors also have a btw-omzetbelastingnummer for their returns; only the btw-id goes on invoices and is in VIES.
- B01, B02 and so on tell entities of one group apart and are part of the number.
Is the number registered?
A valid format and check digit only mean the number could exist. Whether it is currently registered for VAT is known to the Dutch Tax Administration (Belastingdienst), and VIES asks that register for you. Where Netherlands shares them, VIES also returns the registered name and address.
