How Bulgaria VAT numbers are built
BG followed by 9 digits for legal entities (the UIC/EIK from the Commercial Register) or 10 digits for individuals (based on the personal number or a foreigner's number).
Check digit
The last digit is a check digit, with separate weighted modulo-11 rules for 9-digit and 10-digit numbers. The validator checks both.
Common mistakes
- Documents in Bulgarian call it ДДС номер; in VIES the prefix is always BG.
Is the number registered?
A valid format and check digit only mean the number could exist. Whether it is currently registered for VAT is known to the National Revenue Agency (НАП), and VIES asks that register for you. Where Bulgaria shares them, VIES also returns the registered name and address.
