Include the country prefix. EU numbers are checked against VIES in real time, UK numbers with a separate live check.

How Belgium VAT numbers are built

BE followed by 10 digits: the company's enterprise number (ondernemingsnummer / numéro d'entreprise) from the Crossroads Bank for Enterprises. Numbers start with 0; new numbers can also start with 1.

Check digit

The last two digits are 97 minus the first eight digits modulo 97. The validator checks them.

Common mistakes

  • Old 9-digit numbers are written with a leading 0 today: BE0776091951, not BE776091951.
  • The dots in the written form (0776.091.951) are only formatting.

Is the number registered?

A valid format and check digit only mean the number could exist. Whether it is currently registered for VAT is known to FPS Finance (FOD Financiën / SPF Finances), and VIES asks that register for you. Where Belgium shares them, VIES also returns the registered name and address.
